The fourth house in the city of Lawrence, and the second for Tenants to Homeowners, 1603 Random Road was designed and completed during the spring semester of 2001. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house features a fully accessible interior, while the second-floor amenities are designed to accommodate the needs of a residential care provider. The bathrooms are clad in translucent polycarbonate, introducing a dynamic quality of light and transparency to the interior. Recycled gymnasium flooring salvaged from a demolition site in Kansas City adds another layer of material reuse to the project. On the exterior, maintenance-free Corten steel clad the house, while a repurposed cooling tower forms the exterior screen along the two long facades.
