The Barber School

Stone building with fresh roof
The Barber School House was Studio 804’s first foray into the world of construction. Long time preservationist and professor at the University of Kansas, Harris Stone, had worked with students in his summer semester courses to tuck-point the stone walls of an abandoned structure near Lawrence. In the spring of 1995, Studio 804 designed and built a roof structure to enclose this space. The Light steel cover is designed to sway lightly in the wind as it remains independent of the walls it protects. It was designed as a place of assembly for various organizations seeking outdoor meeting space in the warmer months.
